An axe-wielding suspect allegedly launched a violent attack on a police officer outside Delft Police Station in the early hours of Monday morning, leaving the officer seriously injured before a swift response by law enforcement led to the arrest of three suspects.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident unfolded shortly after 2am at Delft SAPS.

Police said a constable was standing outside the Community Service Centre at about 2.05am when he was approached by a suspect armed with an axe.

The suspect allegedly struck the officer on the head, causing serious injuries.
