An explosion tore through a munitions facility in Casalbordino, Italy on July 9, killing a 59-year-old shift supervisor and injuring another worker. The blast occurred during site-clearing operations at a plant that was being prepared for conversion from decommissioning old ammunition to manufacturing new rounds.
The facility, now managed by Turkish-owned Arca Defence Italy SPA, has become something of a recurring nightmare. This is the third fatal explosion at the same site since 2020.
A grim pattern at Casalbordino
In December 2020, an explosion at the facility killed three workers. In September 2023, another blast claimed three more lives. Now a seventh person has died at the same location, with the latest incident occurring during what should have been routine preparation work rather than active production.
The site was formerly operated by a company called Esplodenti Sabino. Arca Defence Italy SPA, its current operator, took over management with plans to transition the facility’s purpose from dismantling old military munitions to building new ones.
