The conservative New Democracy government’s political assessment will begin before the upcoming Thessaloniki International Fair, scheduled for September 5-13, and will peak in the week following the fair, when the impact of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ announcements will be assessed.
At the Maximos Mansion, the prime minister’s office, officials are already making initial calculations about how the political landscape will develop over the autumn, with the aim of shaping the appropriate strategy for the final stretch toward the elections, expected in spring 2027.
Regarding Alexis Tsipras, the former leftist SYRIZA prime minister who recently made a political comeback with the launch of a new party, ELAS (Greek Left Coalition), the assessment at Maximos Mansion is that there is no longer any realistic prospect of him losing second place. In fact, officials believe that, over time, Tsipras could consolidate his position as the second pole of the political system.
The prevailing view is that ELAS will put pressure on, and possibly absorb, part of socialist PASOK’s more left-leaning electorate, as well as some supporters of Zoe Konstantopoulou’s anti-establishment Course of Freedom party and other smaller parties. SYRIZA, meanwhile, is considered to have been almost completely neutralized.
