NSFAS Administrator Professor Hlengani Mathebula is facing mounting scrutiny after Parliament found that payments made to his advisers were procedurally flawed and recommended that the funds be repaid.

The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training has called for action against National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) administrator Professor Hlengani Mathebula after it emerged that payments were made to his advisers without the required approval from the Ministers of Higher Education and Finance.

The committee raised concerns during a briefing on Wednesday on progress made since Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela placed NSFAS under administration in May this year.

Members sought clarity on whether the remuneration and allowances of the administrator’s four advisers had been approved in line with the NSFAS Act.

Committee chairperson Tebogo Letsie said the process followed by the administrator was both legally and procedurally flawed.
