Johannesburg is approaching another defining political moment. With the local government elections looming, the African National Congress faces a decision that goes far beyond selecting another name for a ballot paper. The party must decide whether it wants merely to participate in the contest for Johannesburg, or whether it genuinely intends to reclaim the confidence of the people who live, work and build their lives in the City of Gold.
My view is simple: Naledi Pando should be seriously considered as the ANC's preferred mayoral candidate for Johannesburg — not because the city needs another politician, but because it needs leadership that understands the complexity of governing a metropolis of this scale.
Johannesburg has enormous economic potential, but that potential cannot be realised while residents continue to worry about unreliable services, deteriorating infrastructure, crime, unemployment, housing, informal settlements, waste management and a steady erosion of public confidence in local government. The city needs a mayor who can bring political leadership, administration, business, communities and civil society together around a practical programme of renewal. That is where the case for Pando deserves serious consideration.
