Samoan Golfer Shantael Ligaliga, 27, is driving a new era for the sports in Apia, launching a grassroots initiative to break down the gender divide on the nation's fairways.

She says being the sole female competitor at last year's Samoa Open was a "sad" reflection of a sport she describes as being dominated by men.

Ligaliga is seeking to draw from her experience this year to encourage a new generation of young women to take up golf.

“You don’t have to be good to play golf, just give it a go,” she said.

Ligaliga’s mother was also present at the program to support her as she worked with young golfers on Wednesday.
