The Pacific’s struggle against climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution is taking centre stage in discussions to be held in Samoa, where regional representatives have gathered for the fifth Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Executive Board Meeting.
The two-day meeting, held in Samoa from 12th–13th August, will review SPREP’s progress, consider lessons from the past year and agree on its work programme and budget for the year ahead.
In his message published on the official SPREP website, Director General Sefanaia Nawadra said the organisation’s support for Pacific nations has become increasingly important, as communities face overlapping global and environmental pressures.
“Our Pacific people and communities are not immune. But we are up against a much greater threat, forcing us into the fight for our lives,” Nawadra said. “Pacific communities bear the brunt of the impacts of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution."
He said the meeting is an important opportunity to ensure regional efforts produce meaningful and lasting results for Pacific countries and communities.
