What seemed like an ordinary youth lacrosse final in Pennsylvania became something larger for a team of 25 players under 15, representing Greece.
Surrounded by parents, grandparents and relatives waving Greek flags, the largely Greek-American squad won a tournament in 2024 just one year after its creation.
The effort began in 2018, when Melanie Kapetanakis, visiting Israel, unexpectedly encountered Greece’s national lacrosse team. Hoping to strengthen her children’s connection to their heritage, she helped build an under-15 program, recruiting players through tournaments and family networks.
The initiative has since expanded to three teams, including a girls’ side. Around the sport, friendships formed and a new Greek community emerged.
Meanwhile, Greek lacrosse officials are preparing for the sport’s return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while pursuing a longer-term ambition: establishing the game in Greece.
