Shortly after the end of the FIFA World Cup, and as the summer transfer window returned to full swing, four young Greek soccer players reminded everyone that their generation can dream big and aspire to compete at the highest level. At the same time, they sent a message to Greek fans that there is reason for optimism about the future of the national team.
July will remain unforgettable for Konstantinos Karetsas, Christos Tzolis, Konstantinos Tzolakis and Konstantinos Koulierakis. Clubs from some of Europe’s biggest leagues, including the Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A, committed a combined total of more than €100 million to sign the four players, making a long-term investment in their talent, ability and self-confidence. It marks the most expensive transfer summer ever for Greek soccer players moving abroad.
The fact that English champions Arsenal spent €40 million on Tzolis – the highest fee ever paid for a Greek player moving to a foreign club – illustrates the expectations surrounding this new generation. It is also worth noting that the sales of Tzolis and Karetsas were the most lucrative transfers ever for Club Brugge and Genk, respectively.
