According to him, the debate should not be centred on whether subsidy is inherently good or bad, arguing that governments around the world provide various forms of support to vulnerable populations.
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has stated that the Nigerian government is still paying subsidies on petrol, despite its repeated claims that fuel subsidy has been removed.
Sowore also claimed that the government is secretly subsidising the naira to maintain its exchange rate against the United States dollar, saying Nigerians have not been adequately informed about the measures being used to support the currency.
The AAC presidential candidate made the claims on Tuesday during an interview on Arise TV, where he also said he would restore fuel subsidy if elected president.
According to Sowore, the government has not actually eliminated subsidy but has merely changed the terminology used to describe it.
