Two people – including a 16-year-old boy – have been arrested in western Greece on suspicion of belonging to a phone fraud gang that stole some €40,000 from elderly people in the area.
A police statement Tuesday said the teenager’s mother was also taken into custody on charges of neglecting her son.
It said the first two suspects are believed to have picked up cash and valuables kept at home by vulnerable people whom their alleged confederates – who posed as accountants – talked into giving them up, supposedly to pay overdue taxes.
They were arrested Monday in the town of Agrinio and face criminal charges of fraud and belonging to a criminal organisation. Police believe they picked up €40,000 worth of cash and valuables from four people in Agrinio between July 29 and August 5.
