After missing several deadlines, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is making renewed efforts to complete the Smart Street Vending Zone at Yendada by the end of August. With the civil works, including land levelling, already completed, the civic body is now preparing to install smart kiosks that will house the vendors.The Yendada project is one of the three smart street vending zones planned by the GVMC to provide organised, hygienic and modern vending spaces for street vendors. While the proposed vending zone at Old Jail Road, which was earlier developed as a Night Food Court, has remained stalled due to pending court cases, the Yendada and Duvvada projects have been progressing.The Yendada vending zone has been designed to accommodate 85 eligible and officially recognised street vendors. The project aims to provide them with a kiosk equipped with modern amenities.The kiosks will be fitted with several smart features, including solar power systems, water meters to monitor consumption, a ticketing system, seating facilities and other public amenities. The GVMC also plans to develop adequate parking facilities, install CCTV surveillance cameras for security and declare the entire premises a plastic-free zone as part of its sustainable urban development initiative.GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said the civil works at the site had already been completed and the installation of kiosks would not take much time.“We are planning to complete the works by the end of August,” he said.Meanwhile, the Smart Street Vending Zone at Duvvada is being developed to accommodate around 45 recognised street vendors.Mr. Garg said the GVMC had recently made a presentation before the Central Government on the concept, design and features of the Yendada Smart Street Vending Zone. The project was appreciated and recognised as a ‘best practice,’ making it a potential model for implementation in other Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across the country, he added.
