Friends and fellow runners have paid emotional tribute to George de Rock, remembering the 47-year-old as a devoted husband and father whose kindness and encouragement touched many lives.

The grief left behind by George de Rock’s sudden death has rippled through the trail-running community, with friends remembering a devoted husband and father whose kindness and encouragement touched far more people than he realised.

The 47-year-old trail runner, husband, father, transition coach and mentor died on Thursday, August 6, after falling during a 47km birthday challenge at Constantia Nek in Cape Town.

He had set out on his birthday, intending to celebrate another year of life by taking on what was to be his longest trail run.

Instead, his wife, Yolanda de Rock, and their children were left facing the devastating loss of a man whose birthday had been meant to be a celebration.
