Authorities have warned desperate home seekers of a sophisticated housing fraud syndicate operating a RDP housing scam across South Africa.

Municipal and provincial housing authorities cautioned anyone against handing over money for government-subsidised as the scam involves fake officials, fraudulent documents, and promises of housing allocations.

The latest warning comes from Midvaal Local Municipality, which says individuals have been using the name of Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira to solicit payments for RDP houses.

The municipality emphasised that no one is authorised to sell RDP houses on behalf of the mayor or the municipality, and that subsidised housing is allocated free of charge through official processes.

“Residents are urged not to make any payments for RDP houses or believe false promises of housing allocation in exchange for money,” said municipality spokesperson Idah Satikhe.
