Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have uncovered several RDP houses allegedly being illegally rented out to undocumented foreign nationals after drone surveillance was used during a government crackdown.
The discoveries were made during Operation Nenzani LaEzweni in Mount Moriah, where investigators attached to the Department of Human Settlements’ elite unit traced individuals believed to be Malawian and Zimbabwean nationals to a number of RDP homes after they allegedly attempted to evade authorities.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the operation had exposed what appears to be a growing network of corruption and illegal occupation involving government-subsidised housing.
“The utilisation of drone technology during the execution of Operation Nenzani LaEzweni has led to the identification of several RDP houses in Mount Moriah that are allegedly being illegally leased to undocumented foreign nationals.”
The investigation has since widened as authorities move to dismantle syndicates allegedly involved in the unlawful sale and rental of RDP houses.
