The South African Police Service (SAPS) has debunked a fake notice circulating widely on social media, claiming that landlords face criminal charges and R10,000 fines for renting property to undocumented migrants.
The fraudulent notice, falsely presented as an official SAPS communication, claims that accommodating "undocumented immigrants" is a criminal offence.
It further alleged that landlords could receive a R10,000 penalty for every undocumented tenant, face criminal prosecution for "aiding and abetting", and risk property inspections that could result in buildings being shut down.
