Russian forces launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine, striking Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia with ballistic and anti-ship missiles, guided aerial bombs and more than 120 drones, including jet-powered Shahed variants, Ukrainian authorities said.
The attacks took place overnight from Aug. 10 to 11, with Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia among the main targets. Russia used Zircon anti-ship missiles and Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles launched from the Kursk, Rostov, Voronezh and Oryol regions, according to Ukraine's Air Force.
The drone assault involved 120 Shahed and Gerbera attack drones, including some jet-powered Shaheds, as well as Parodiya decoy UAVs. The drones were launched from several locations in Russia, including Kursk, Millerovo, Oryol and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as from the occupied Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Hvardiiske in Crimea.
Ukraine's Air Force said aircraft, air defense missile units, electronic warfare systems, unmanned units and mobile fire groups were involved in repelling the attack. By 9 a.m., Ukrainian forces had destroyed or jammed 98 of the attacking drones.
"As of 09:00, [Ukrainian] air defense forces had destroyed or jammed 98 Shahed, Gerbera and other types of drones in the country's north, south and east," the Air Force said. It added that impacts had been recorded at 21 locations, while debris from downed aerial targets had fallen at five sites.
