The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is convening its brand-new Innovation Advisory Committee for the first time on August 20, a three-hour virtual session that will dig into some of the most consequential questions facing financial regulators right now: how to handle crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets.

The meeting runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EDT and marks the formal debut of a body that could shape how Washington regulates the next generation of financial products.

What the IAC actually is

The Innovation Advisory Committee launched in January 2026 as a successor to the CFTC’s Technology Advisory Committee, which covered similar ground.

CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig sponsors the committee. Michael Passalacqua serves as the Designated Federal Officer, essentially the person responsible for making sure the committee follows federal advisory rules and actually produces useful output.
