With rising use of UPI-linked RuPay cards, credit is no longer restricted to big-ticket purchases but is becoming embedded in everyday finances. For years, credit cards and UPI served two distinct purposes. Credit cards for many were primarily reserved for big spends like shopping, travel or big-ticket purchases on EMIs, while UPI since its launch fast became India’s preferred payment mode for small everyday spends such as buying groceries at local shops or paying cab fares. However, the introduction of RuPay Credit Cards on UPI has been a game-changer. By enabling RuPay cardholders to link their cards to popular UPI apps and make merchant payments exactly the same way, but through a credit card, formal credit and payments have been brought together seamlessly. This, for a large section, has transformed how consumers perceive, use, and get benefits of credit cards in their everyday lives.Credit Is No Longer Reserved For Big PurchasesWith rising use of UPI-linked RuPay cards, credit is no longer restricted to big-ticket purchases but is becoming embedded in everyday finances. For many consumers, especially those who heavily rely on UPI, this works as a natural extension of an existing payment habit.UPI payments via credit cards bring three main benefits –First, credit card usage at small merchants and kirana storesUPI-linked credit cards can be used for making payments at neighbourhood kirana stores, pharmacies, local eateries, and other small merchants just by scanning the QR Code. They are equally useful for everyday online purchases through quick commerce platforms such as Swiggy Instamart, Blinkit and Zepto, where UPI is often the preferred payment mode. This provides consumers with the opportunity to use credit cards even for smaller spends, without having to carry their physical cards everywhere or look for a PoS terminal. More importantly, it integrates credit into everyday spending habits.Second, value-back in the form of rewards or cashback on everyday spendsEach eligible UPI spend will earn value-back, which makes all transactions rewarding. For example, if you spend Rs. 3,500 at a grocery store and your card offers 1.5% cashback on UPI, you will earn Rs. 52.50. This may look like a small amount for a single transaction, but when multiple UPI transactions earn cashback, you save a significant amount. Some cards also provide accelerated earnings on certain categories like groceries, utility bill payments, dining, etc., further adding to your savings potential.Third, more efficient cash-flow management with interest-free periodWhen you make a UPI transaction, the amount gets instantly deducted from your savings account. However, when this transaction goes through a credit card, it is added to your monthly credit card bill instead of being immediately deducted from your bank account. This gives you an interest-free period of up to 50 days, depending on the card’s billing cycle, allowing you to pay at a later date without paying any interest. This can be particularly useful for managing short-term cash flows. Moreover, frequent UPI users often make multiple small transactions every week, which can clutter your account, making it difficult to get a clear picture of monthly expenses. When such UPI payments are made using a RuPay Credit Card, they are consolidated into a single monthly credit card statement. This makes it easier for consumers to track spending across categories and manage their monthly budget more effectively. Not Every RuPay Credit Card Is Built The SameToday, all leading credit card issuers either offer RuPay variants of their existing credit cards or other UPI-focused RuPay Credit Cards. However, not every RuPay Card provides similar benefits on UPI transactions. In reality, the value proposition varies significantly across issuers and card variants. Some offer accelerated rewards on selected spending categories, while others provide flat cashback. Some offer strong value in the form of milestone benefits or merchant-specific offers, while others are co-branded with popular platforms. It is important for consumers to look beyond headline cashback figures and evaluate the overall proposition. The most rewarding card is not necessarily the one offering the highest cashback; it is the one that aligns best with your spending behaviour. So, here are a few questions that you should ask before applying for a RuPay Credit Card:· Does it offer good value-back on my everyday UPI spends?· Does it provide additional benefits on categories where I spend the most?· What are the cappings, exclusions and other terms and conditions on the rewards program?· What does it offer beyond UPI?· What are the fees and charges it entails? The answers to these questions will help you shortlist cards that actually match your spending preferences and where you can actually optimize the benefits.Convenience Should Not Come at the Cost of Financial DisciplineThe greatest advantage of RuPay Credit Cards on UPI is convenience. Ironically, that convenience can also become the biggest challenge.Since the payment process feels identical to making a regular UPI payment, consumers may become less aware of their spends through the credit card as they do not see deductions from their bank balance instantly like in case of regular UPI spends.Multiple small purchases and spends can add up and lead to an unexpected and sizeable credit card bill. For this reason, financial discipline becomes even more important as credit becomes integrated into everyday payment habits. Hence, once you get the best-suited RuPay credit card, it is advisable to manage it well through the following measures:· Track your spending and credit utilisation: When you start using a RuPay Credit Card on UPI, regularly monitor your transactions and credit utilisation ratio (CUR). Responsible card usage can help build and maintain a strong credit profile.· Set up payment reminders or auto-debit: Setting up reminders or auto-debit instructions can help ensure timely bill payments and avoid late payment charges.· Review your credit card statement regularly: Do not rely only on your UPI transaction history. Reviewing your monthly credit card statement gives a clearer picture of your total spending and helps you identify unnecessary expenses and be mindful of your monthly budget. Most importantly, a credit limit should never be viewed as additional income. It is simply a convenient borrowing facility that works best when repayments are made in full every month.Beyond Rewards, It Can Help Build a Stronger Credit ProfileMany RuPay Credit Cards are entry-level and come with easy eligibility and low income requirements, making them a good fit for consumers who are just entering the formal credit ecosystem.Regular usage, timely repayment of the full outstanding amount and maintaining a healthy credit utilisation ratio demonstrate responsible borrowing behaviour. Over time, this contributes to a stronger credit profile, which can improve eligibility for future financial products such as home loans, personal loans or higher credit limits.Several secured credit cards are also available on the RuPay network – combining benefits of guaranteed approval, credit building and savings on everyday spends. For new-to-credit consumers or those with bad credit, secured RuPay Cards can become the first opportunity to build a positive credit history through everyday spending.Looking AheadThe integration of RuPay Credit Cards with UPI represents an important shift in India's digital payments landscape. Rather than asking consumers to adopt a new payment habit, it embeds formal credit into one they already use every day. And as more banks introduce RuPay variants of their credit cards, everyday UPI transactions are likely to become an important channel for credit card usage. For UPI-first users, RuPay Credit Cards offer an opportunity to derive greater value from everyday spending without changing the way they pay. At the same time, convenience should not overshadow responsible credit usage. Choosing a card that matches one's spending habits, keeping credit utilisation under control and paying the full outstanding amount every month remain the key to unlocking the true value of RuPay Credit Cards.(The author, Santosh Agarwal is the CEO of Paisabazaar)But if you are a premium credit card user who is looking for a mix of everyday and luxury-use benefits, then high-end credit cards like the Times Black may make sense for you.
