In response to the crisis, the US Department of Defense is urgently pressing American defense contractors to accelerate production. ABC News reported that Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the department is working to speed up munitions procurement so supplies arrive “at the pace the threat demands.” The push includes a reported letter from Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg to leading defense companies, demanding plans within 21 days to drastically accelerate production volumes for critical weapons. “Multi-year development cycles are unacceptable,” Feinberg reportedly wrote. “We must significantly accelerate our schedules and expand production capacity right now.” Impact on Ukraine’s defense The NYT highlighted that the US ammunition deficit is most acutely affecting Ukraine.
