MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) mobilized additional personnel and resources to flood-hit communities, ramping up rescue operations as torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” forced residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate.
“We made available as many personnel and resources for evacuation and other disaster response,” said PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. in a statement on Sunday.The southwest monsoon or “habagat” is expected to continue affecting Luzon, with a red rainfall warning in effect over Ilocos Sur and Benguet, according to the state weather bureau on Sunday.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said a red rainfall alert means more than 200 millimeters of rain could fall, raising the risk of severe flooding and landslides.
