Sir, – I write in response to Fintan O’Toole’s article on MetroLink (“Dublin 4’s version of Marie Antoinette’s ‘let them eat cake’? Let them get the bus,” Opinion, August 4th). It is now more than a year since Dublin Bus in its infinite wisdom replaced the once-every-10-minutes 46A with a once-every-half-hour (if you are lucky) 11 bus. Quite predictably, queues of people, mostly young migrants, now line a stretch of the route from the Phoenix Park along the North Circular Road. Most of these people, I expect, just want to get to town and are not bound for the buses ultimate destination of Sandyford Business Park. Meanwhile, on the other side of town the 46A has been replaced with the very regular E1 and E2 Services. People there also have a number of options for getting to and from the airport. Thousands of housing units have been added along the northside of this route since this ill-fated decision. If the Government can build a temporary train station in Adare for the Ryder Cup, why not build one in Cabra so people can get the train that goes from Heuston to Grand Canal and relieve the traffic pressure in the area?In 1904 a character from Ulysses opined while on the North Circular Road that a tram to the river straight down this road would be a novel idea and would greatly benefit the residents.
