Sir, – In his letter to The Irish Times on May 16th, Joe Glackin captured what so many of us experience on a daily basis while waiting for the No 80 bus in Upper Rathmines, sometimes for 30 to 40 minutes while watching a timetable move up and down and empty buses sail past. This bus is the only bus servicing Upper Rathmines Road and is an example of an appalling service where there appears to be no connection between the timetable and the bus arrivals. People struggling to get to work on time are left puzzled and dare I say frustrated. Not everyone, including this writer, can drive or cycle, which has become far too dangerous – so the only option is the bus.A lot of taxpayers’ money is being spent preparing for our European presidency in July. Some of this money should be spent nearer home to look at why the quality of some of our public services leaves a lot to be desired. Those planning bus services need to view the service from a bus stop, not from the comfort of an office with technological aids. – Yours, etc,ALICE LEAHY,Rathmines,Dublin 6.
