Police on Zakynthos say three rapes of tourists have been reported to them in the past three months, leading to two arrests, after a hospital union leader claimed a spate of sexual assaults targeting foreigners on the resort island is going unpunished.
Friday’s police statement said all three cases were fully investigated, in cooperation with judicial and medical authorities.
“We are dedicated to investigating every report, protecting victims and reliably informing public opinion, solely based on official and confirmed data,” the statement said.
Earlier, the head of the POEDIN hospital staff union had claimed that high numbers of tourists arriving on the western island have led to a massive workload for local hospital employees amid staffing shortages.
