The IEC is moving into the next phase of election preparations after Hlabisa proclaimed the 2026 municipal election date, with parties awaiting the official electoral timetable.
The voters’ roll for the 2026 Local Government Elections closes at midnight on Friday after Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa officially proclaimed November 4, 2026 as election day.
Hlabisa made the announcement in Durban on Friday, setting the date for South Africans to elect new municipal councils across the country.
The closure of the voters’ roll means no further registrations or changes to voter details will be processed for the 2026 Local Government Elections once the deadline passes.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said the proclamation of the election date allows it to move into the next phase of the electoral programme, including the publication of the election timetable and preparations leading up to voting day.
