Co-operative-Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has encouraged South Africans turning 18 before the elections to register, warning that failing to do so could exclude them from deciding their communities’ futures.
Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa says the government will officially proclaim November 4 as the date for the 2026 local government elections on Friday, August 7.
Speaking in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, Hlabisa said the government gazette had been prepared, and that space had been booked for Friday to proclaim the election date officially.
"A government gazette is ready. We've booked the space on Friday the 7th of August. I will officially gazette the 4th of November as the election date for local government elections, and the voters' roll will close at midnight on that day," he said.
Hlabisa urged all South Africans who will be 18 years old by November 4 to use the voter registration period to register for the first time or verify that their details are correctly reflected on the voters' roll.
