The Electoral Commission has urged eligible South Africans to use the final voter registration weekend on 1 and 2 August before the voters' roll closes ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
South Africans have until this weekend to register to vote or update their registration details before the voters' roll closes once the date for the 2026 Local Government Elections is proclaimed.
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sy Mamabolo said the proclamation of the election date, expected after the final voter registration weekend, August 1- August 2, would mark the next phase of the electoral process, with the voters' roll closing at midnight on the day the election is proclaimed.
With fewer than 100 days remaining before the elections, Mamabolo called on eligible South Africans who have not yet registered, those who have not checked their address details, and those who have moved since they last registered to make use of the final registration weekend.
“Participation in elections begins with registration, enabling citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote,” Mamabolo said.
