Young voters are registering in encouraging numbers, but the IEC says first-time voters aged 18 and 19 remain its biggest challenge ahead of November's local government elections.
South Africans have until this weekend to register to vote or update their registration details before the voters' roll closes ahead of the November local government elections.
Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo urged eligible voters to make use of the final voter registration weekend, saying the commission's focus was on ensuring voters were correctly registered in the wards where they live.
"Every voter has an address on the voters' roll and that address places them in a relevant ward. This being local government elections, a ward gains prominence because people may only vote for the ward councillor in the ward in which they live."
He said that while surpassing the 29 million registered voter mark would be "a good psychological point to surpass", the accuracy of the voters' roll remained the commission's priority.
