The IEC has urged South Africans to use the voter registration weekend to register or update their details, confirming that proof of residence will not be required for registration.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has urged eligible voters to ensure they are correctly registered ahead of this weekend’s voter registration drive for the 2026 local government elections.

South Africans heading to voter registration stations this weekend will not be required to provide proof of residence when registering or updating their details on the voters’ roll, the IEC confirmed.

The commission has called on eligible citizens to take full advantage of the voter registration weekend on June 20 and 21 to register, verify or update their details ahead of the elections.

Addressing a media briefing on Thursday, IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said all 23,706 registration stations across the country would be open from 8am to 5pm on both days.
