Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), Sy Mamabolo.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has announced a second voter registration weekend for August 1 and 2, giving eligible South Africans another opportunity to register or update their details ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Speaking during a media briefing on Monday after the voter registration weekend, IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the additional registration period forms part of efforts to expand voter access and strengthen electoral participation.
The announcement comes after the IEC recorded 2.9 million voter registrations on Saturday and Sunday, which increased the national voters’ roll to 28.5 million voters.
Over 785 000 young individuals aged 16 to 29 registered to vote. This demographic makes up a considerable 27% of the total registrations and is predominantly female, with 59% of the registrations coming from young women and 41% from young men.
