IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya briefs the media on Friday after the proclamation of the 2026 Local Government Elections date, outlining key deadlines, candidate nominations and preparations ahead of the 4 November polls.
Political parties and independent candidates have until 5pm on 28 August 2026 to submit their candidate nominations for the Local Government Elections, as the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) begins the formal countdown to the 4 November 2026 polls.
IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya briefed the media on Friday on the election timetable after Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa proclaimed the election date.
The proclamation officially starts the country’s 89-day election timetable, which sets out the deadlines and processes leading up to election day.
The IEC said the timetable provides certainty for political parties, independent candidates, voters, civil society organisations and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
