Political parties and independent candidates have started preparing for the 2026 Local Government Elections, with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) confirming that dozens of contestants have already begun using its online candidate nomination system ahead of the official nomination period.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sy Mamabolo said the Commission had activated the Online Candidate Nomination System (OCNS) to assist registered political parties and prospective independent candidates in preparing for candidate nominations.
“The Commission has activated the Online Candidate Nomination System to facilitate nomination,” Mamabolo said.
The IEC said 76 political parties and 39 independent candidates had already started using the system, allowing them to capture candidate information ahead of the official opening of candidate nominations.
