Political parties and independent candidates have started preparing for the 2026 Local Government Elections, with the IEC confirming dozens are already using its online candidate nomination system ahead of nominations.
South Africans are becoming more modernised when it comes to registering for the elections, as the online system, which was first introduced ahead of the 2021 local government elections, is getting traction, especially among women and young people.
This was revealed when the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) briefed the media in Pretoria on Wednesday on its progress in preparation for the November 4 elections.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sy Mamabolo said online registration has made it easier for prospective voters to register while in the comfort of their own space.
Mamabolo said the commission has finalised its preparations for the last voter registration weekend, which will be on Saturday and Sunday.
