Tower firm SBA Communications has held discussions with multiple satellite providers over potential terrestrial deployments for direct-to-device (D2D) offerings.

Brendan Cavanagh, president and chief executive officer, SBA Communications, confirmed that talks have taken place over possible partnerships, noting on the company's Q2 earnings call earlier this week that there is a "need for a terrestrial component of those networks."

Cavanagh didn't name the satellite providers, but said that SBA has identified this sector as an area of growth for the future.

"With regard to satellite solutions, there’s been a lot of discussion around direct-to-device satellite technology. Our view remains unchanged. Satellites are a complement to terrestrial wireless networks, not a substitute for them," said Cavanagh.
