SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the company intends to build out ground-based infrastructure to complement its satellite service

SpaceX outlined plans to build a terrestrial mobile network that would position it as a direct competitor to AT&T $T, Verizon $VZ, and T-Mobile $TMUS, the company said Tuesday on its debut earnings call.
SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said the company plans to add land-based infrastructure — including cell towers and small cell nodes — on top of its existing satellite internet service. "We definitely intend to build out the terrestrial component," Shotwell said. "So you will have not only the capacity from the satellites themselves, but you will have a build-out of the hardware and systems necessary to make a true mobile service."
