The United States is continuing to support Samoa's efforts to strengthen tsunami preparedness, helping coastal communities improve their ability to respond to future tsunami threats.
Experts from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) between April and July 2026.
During the visit, specialists installed new hardware and tsunami threat analysis software at the National Tsunami Warning Centre within the Samoa Meteorological Service. They also trained MNRE staff and reviewed tsunami warning operating procedures to strengthen the country's early warning capabilities.
The support extends beyond government agencies, with the MNRE's Disaster Management Office continuing work towards Tsunami Ready Recognition in more than 30 communities. Activities include community consultations, installation of tsunami evacuation signboards, public awareness program and emergency exercises through the Community Disaster and Climate Risk Management Program.
According to the press release, the ongoing partnership reflects the shared commitment of Samoa and the United States to improving disaster preparedness, early warning systems and community resilience.
