Two men have been arrested in northern Greece for allegedly repeatedly dumping large quantities of solid waste in the countryside near Thessaloniki over the past three years, police said Thursday.
The crackdown came amid patrols carried out in the northern port city’s environs by officers from a special environmental protection unit.
A police statement said a man was arrested early Wednesday in the act of dumping a truckload of waste from real estate renovation work in a field in the municipality of Halkidona, northwest of Thessaloniki.
Officers subsequently detained the owner of the truck, who had allegedly ordered the dumping.
