The Bo-Kaap community is mourning the loss of a 35-year-old father and community worker who was weeks away from taking up a new role serving his neighbourhood when he was shot dead in a drive-by shooting on Wednesday night.
Ameen Samuels was standing with a group of people in Voetboog Street at around 8.36pm when occupants of a red Polo Vivo allegedly opened fire before fleeing the scene. He was declared dead at the scene.
Provincial police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed that a murder case had been opened.
“This office can confirm that a murder case has been opened at Cape Town Central SAPS following a shooting incident that happened at Voetboog Street, Bo-Kaap on Wednesday, 05 August 2026 at approximately 8.36pm.
"According to bystanders, unknown suspects who were in a red Polo Vivo shot at a 35-year-old male victim and fled the scene. He was then declared deceased at the crime scene by medical personnel. No arrest has been made yet and investigation continues.”
