A 31-year-old spaza shop owner, known as Umar, was shot and killed on Monday evening.

Police have launched a murder investigation after a 31-year-old spaza shop owner was shot and killed while serving customers at his shop in Bonteheuwel on Monday evening, with community leaders raising concerns over alleged extortion targeting local businesses.

The shooting took place at about 7.52pm on July 13 in Assegaai Street.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers from Bishop Lavis police station responded to reports of a shooting and found the shop owner inside the premises with a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the victim was attending to customers when unidentified gunmen opened fire before fleeing in an unknown direction.
