Microsoft just made its largest investment bet in Asia, and it’s not in Tokyo, Singapore, or Seoul. It’s in India, where the company is deploying roughly $21 billion to build out cloud and AI infrastructure over the next several years. The centerpiece: a massive hyperscale data center in Hyderabad that will be the biggest in the country when it opens in mid-2026.
What Microsoft is actually building
The $21 billion figure comes from stacking two commitments. Microsoft announced a $3 billion investment in India back in January 2025, followed by a much larger $17.5 billion allocation disclosed in December 2025 covering the 2026 to 2029 period. Combined, that’s roughly $20.5 billion, with the headline rounded up to $21 billion.
The crown jewel is a new Azure region called India South Central, based in Hyderabad. The facility will feature three availability zones and is reportedly comparable in size to two Eden Gardens cricket stadiums combined.
Beyond Hyderabad, existing Azure regions in Chennai and Pune will also receive significant upgrades. When completed, Microsoft will operate four Azure regions across India. The investment also covers sovereign cloud solutions, which are designed to keep sensitive government and enterprise data within India’s borders, and training programs targeting more than 20 million individuals.
