Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has highlighted the Constitutional limitations on the Metro Police's investigative powers.
Speaking at the meeting of the Police Portfolio Committee, Cachalia said parties should rather build consensus as the DA-led Western Cape government has a strong position on the matter.
He stated that having received representations from City of Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, he understood that from the DA’s point of view that it was important to make a public statement.
“In response to that I have obtained legal advice that specific recommendations made are not consistent with section 205 of the Constitution. Nevertheless, I have said I have an open mind on this matter,” he said.
