Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia on Wednesday ruled out expanding the policing function to include the investigation of crime by metro police because he has been advised that doing so was inconsistent with the Constitution.
Speaking at the meeting of the Police Portfolio Committee, Cachalia said parties should rather build consensus as the DA-led Western Cape government has a strong position on the matter.
He stated that having received representations from Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, he understood that from the DA’s point of view it was important to make a public statement.
“In response to that I have obtained legal advice that specific recommendations made are not consistent with section 205 of the Constitution. Nevertheless, I have said I have an open mind on this matter,” he said.
