Department of International Relations and Cooperation has launched an internal investigation into High Commissioner Anil Sooklal's attendance at an event with former President Jacob Zuma and fugitive Ajay Gupta during Zuma's private visit to India.
Questions are mounting over the conduct of South Africa's High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, after the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), confirmed it is seeking answers about his appearance alongside former President Jacob Zuma and Ajay Gupta at a prayer ceremony in Haridwar.
The department committed that it has requested Sooklal, to provide a full account of Zuma's recent visit to India, during which he met Ajay.
The request follows the publication of photographs in Indian media showing Zuma, Sooklal and Gupta alongside Swami Kailashanand Giri during a prayer ceremony at the Siddhpeeth Shri Dakshin Kali Temple in Haridwar on Friday, June 26.
DIRCO has since launched an internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Sooklal's attendance at the event.
