Widespread thundershowers gave most parts of Tamil Nadu a refreshing start to August, bringing respite from soaring temperatures that marked much of July. The wet spell is expected to continue across several parts of the State till August 10, keeping temperatures in check.The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast that rainfall would continue over isolated places of north Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats region till Monday. During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, various places across the State received moderate to heavy rainfall, providing a much-needed break from a dry spell. Kodavasal in Tiruvarur district received 7 cm, the highest volume recorded in the State for the day.Officials of the RMC said moderate rainfall is likely over isolated places in around 10 north and interior districts, including Chennai, Cuddalore, Tiruchi, and Karur, on Wednesday. Gusty winds of speeds reaching 40-50 kmph may prevail. Other districts of the State also have chances of isolated light rainfall.While those along the Western Ghats region like Theni and Coimbatore districts may record heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday, wet weather conditions may persist in the State till August 10.V.R. Durai, Head, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, RMC, said an upper air cyclonic circulation off north coastal Tamil Nadu and two other weather systems over south interior Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh influenced the wet weather in many places of the State.The active Southwest monsoon conditions helped revive the wet spell, particularly in northern districts. Rainfall in various places would also largely keep temperatures in control this week, with less chances of the mercury level crossing 40 degrees Celsius.The wet spell has also helped narrow the State’s overall rain deficit from 18% recorded on August 1 to 14% on Tuesday. This is expected to reduce further. Though high humidity level would cause discomfort in coastal areas, evening showers are expected to provide relief, he said.The RMC has forecast that Chennai would experience moderate rainfall during evening/night hours on Wednesday and the maximum temperature would be 36-37 degrees Celsius.
