After weeks of scorching temperatures, intense heat may gradually ease its grip on Tamil Nadu from Tuesday. The start of June is set to bring a spell of heavy rainfall over several parts of west and interior districts, which is likely to continue till Sunday.The day temperature peaked above the 40-degree mark in Chennai Meenambakkam. However, the maximum temperature would remain near normal or drop below average from Tuesday, noted officials.The Southwest monsoon, which is expected to advance over parts of Kerala in the next two or three days, is likely to impact the weather in the State. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rainfall with thundershowers in 22 districts across Tamil Nadu, including Vellore, Salem, Theni, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, and Karur on Tuesday.Heavy rainfall in various districts that had recorded sizzling temperatures, including Ranipet, Vellore, and Madurai, would continue throughout the week. These districts would also experience gusty winds with speed reaching up to 40-50 kmph till June 5.Weather systems, including a trough running from east Vidarbha to south Kerala across Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu, would aid the wet spell.On Monday, Vellore recorded 40.5 degrees Celsius, the hottest maximum temperature for the day in the State. Various rain gauges, including Kodaikanal, Vellore, Valparai, and Krishnagiri, received light rainfall on Monday till 6 p.m.D.S. Pai, Head, RMC, said Tamil Nadu largely remains a rain shadow region during Southwest monsoon. Parts of the State, including the Western Ghats, may experience the impact of the monsoon onset phase with a weak pulse expected to persist for three or four days.Most parts of the State are likely to get a respite from the searing heat and temperatures may stay close to normal or drop by a few degrees.Coastal parts too may have their share of thundershower activity, if not immediately, over the coming days.On the heatwave conditions predicted in isolated regions of the State during June, he said the chances are minimal for at least one week as the wet spell is likely to continue.
