South Central Railway (SCR) detected 4,121 cases of ticketless travel and unbooked luggage during a day-long special drive conducted on Monday. A total penalty of ₹30.53 lakh was collected from the offenders.The intensive inspection drive was carried out by 186 ticket-checking staff aboard 169 trains across the jurisdictions of the Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Nanded divisions.Apart from ticketless travel, railway officials also booked passengers for other offences. Thirty-five passengers were penalised for littering, resulting in fines of ₹7,300. Action was also taken against 19 unauthorised hawkers, from whom penalties amounting to ₹38,000 were collected. Two passengers were fined ₹4,000 for smoking.During the drive, railway staff also created awareness among passengers about penalties for various offences. Travellers were sensitised to the fire hazards associated with smoking in trains and railway premises and were urged to refrain from littering. Officials encouraged passengers to help maintain cleanliness at railway stations and onboard trains by following good civic practices.SCR general manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava commended the efforts of the ticket-checking staff and their role in creating awareness among passengers about railway rules and penalties, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.
