Jordan Henderson, the 36-year-old midfielder currently at Brentford, broke his left forearm during England’s World Cup celebrations in July 2026. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso says Henderson can begin team training during the semi-finals stage but still needs further medical assessment before getting the green light.
The Henderson situation, explained
Henderson suffered the fracture in a somewhat ironic fashion. After England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup last-16, he fell over advertising boards during post-match celebrations. He underwent surgery but stayed with the national squad through recovery.
Back at club level, Henderson is under contract at Brentford until 2027, but reportedly has a gentleman’s agreement to leave. Chelsea, now under Alonso’s management, has been linked with signing him on a free transfer.
Alonso has publicly emphasized his need for midfield experience and leadership. The manager has also been dealing with other pre-season fitness concerns, with players like Romeo Lavia missing friendlies.
