The lawyer also accused the judiciary of prioritising Sowore's case over other criminal matters, including terrorism-related prosecutions.
Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has criticised the ongoing criminal trial of human rights activist and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, stating that the case is being fast-tracked for political reasons ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Ejimakor made the remarks while reacting to Sowore's appearance before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, August 3, where he is standing trial for calling President Bola Tinubu “a criminal."
Questioning the handling of the case, Ejimakor suggested that the timing of the trial created troubling political optics.
"The optics are very bad, because both are candidates in an election that is months away. Would they dare subject Atiku or Peter Obi to this sort of rigorous trial, so close to a presidential election?" he said.
