Iran Human Rights announced that Mehdi Roshani, a Kurdish protester arrested in connection with the January 6 protests in Malekshahi County, has been sentenced to death on security-related charges.
The organisation reported on Monday, August 3, that Mehdi Roshani was arrested at his home on January 21 and transferred to Tehran. According to Iran Human Rights, following his arrest, he was held in complete incommunicado detention for two months and subjected to severe torture in an attempt to extract forced confessions, which, according to the organisation, formed the basis of his death sentence.
Citing an informed source, Iran Human Rights reported that an individual who saw Mehdi Roshani after his return from Tehran observed extensive signs of torture on his body.
The source stated: “If you saw his body, you would be horrified. There wasn’t a healthy spot left on it. It was covered in marks from electric shocks and lashes, yet he refused to confess.” According to the report, Mehdi Roshani was released on bail in mid-May, but security forces rearrested him approximately two weeks later. He has been held in complete incommunicado detention ever since.
The source also noted that Mehdi Roshani’s family had been placed under pressure and warned to remain silent regarding his case. According to the source, about a month ago, his family was informed that he had been sentenced to death on charges including the murder of police officer Ehsan Aghajani.
