A group of youth volunteers from the United States has completed the construction of a new canteen and classroom facility at Malie Primary School, providing students and parents with improved facilities after 10 weeks of work.
Group leader Elli Miller said the project was completed by five groups of volunteers, with each group spending two weeks in Samoa to carry out different stages of construction.
"We've had five groups over the summer, and we're building this canteen for the school," Miller said.
The new building includes classrooms, a canteen where mothers will be able to sell food during school lunch breaks, and office space. Miller said the school had previously relied on a temporary tent for its canteen.
"I believe they've been using a tent for their canteen. Now they'll have a permanent building where food can be served to the students," he said.
